Researchers Unveil Five‑Metal Alloy Catalyst That Could Lower Fuel‑Cell Costs

A team of scientists has announced the creation of a five‑metal alloy that serves as an ultra‑stable catalyst for hydrogen fuel cells, a development that could lessen dependence on expensive platinum and make clean‑energy technologies more affordable.

Fuel cells, which convert hydrogen and oxygen into electricity and water, rely on catalysts to accelerate the chemical reaction. Platinum has long been the material of choice because of its high activity, but its scarcity and price have been major hurdles for widespread adoption in vehicles, stationary power stations and portable devices.

The newly reported alloy blends platinum with four more abundant transition metals, forming a composite that maintains catalytic activity while dramatically improving resistance to degradation over time. Laboratory tests showed the material retained performance after prolonged operation under conditions that typically cause platinum catalysts to lose efficiency.

Enhanced durability and reduced material costs could have a ripple effect across the hydrogen economy. Automakers, utility companies and manufacturers of portable power units are all watching the development, as a cheaper, longer‑lasting catalyst would lower the total cost of ownership for fuel‑cell systems and could accelerate market penetration.
