For China, a nation that feeds roughly one‑fifth of the world’s population, the implications are significant. Flood‑induced crop failures can ripple through supply chains, depress farm incomes and strain food‑security buffers. Authorities have already begun to invest in flood‑resilient infrastructure, including raised levees, improved drainage networks and early‑warning systems, but the researchers caution that adaptation alone may be insufficient without broader emissions reductions.

The authors call for integrated policy responses that combine climate mitigation with targeted agricultural adaptation. They suggest that future research should focus on region‑specific vulnerability assessments and the development of crop varieties better suited to water‑logged conditions. As extreme rainfall becomes a more regular feature of China’s climate, policymakers, farmers and scientists will need to coordinate closely to safeguard the country’s food production from the growing threat of floods.
