Dissolvable Toilet Pellets Could Cut Flushes and Conserve Water, Study Finds

A novel toilet tablet that dissolves to tint flush water blue and neutralise odour after urination may offer a practical way to reduce household water consumption, according to a pioneering study conducted by researchers at the University of Surrey.

The investigation, the first of its kind, examined how the use of these dissolvable pellets influences flushing behaviour. By providing a visual cue—the blue colour—and masking unpleasant smells, the tablets appear to encourage users to flush less frequently, thereby saving the roughly six litres of water typically used per standard flush.

Water scarcity remains a pressing concern across many regions, and domestic sanitation accounts for a significant share of residential water demand. Traditional low‑flow toilets have helped curb usage, but the study suggests that behavioural interventions, such as the sensory feedback offered by the pellets, could complement hardware upgrades. Researchers observed that participants reported feeling more confident that the toilet was clean after using the product, which reduced the perceived need for an immediate second flush.

While the University of Surrey team did not disclose precise volume reductions, they highlighted the scalability of the approach. The pellets are inexpensive to manufacture and can be packaged for widespread retail distribution, making them accessible to a broad consumer base. If adopted widely, even modest reductions per household could translate into substantial savings at the municipal level, easing pressure on treatment facilities and conserving freshwater resources.

The next steps outlined by the researchers involve larger‑scale field trials to quantify water savings more accurately and to assess long-term user acceptance. Environmental groups have welcomed the findings, noting that low‑cost, behaviour‑based solutions are essential complements to policy‑driven water efficiency measures.
