Cover Crops Show Promise in Smoothing Transition from Perennial Forage Seed to Annual Crops
Preliminary research carried out in Canada suggests that planting cover crops after ending a perennial forage seed stand can markedly ease the move to annual cropping, a shift that many producers find technically demanding.
Perennial forage seed fields are designed to persist for many years, and when they reach the end of their productive life the standard practice is to terminate the stand and sow a new annual crop. The process is often hampered by the original plants re‑sprouting or by opportunistic weeds quickly colonising the bare soil, both of which can suppress the intended cash crop and drive up management costs.
Cover crops—fast‑growing, non‑market species sown between primary crops—offer a potential buffer. By establishing a dense vegetative cover immediately after termination, they compete with any lingering perennial shoots and with emerging weeds, while also protecting the soil surface from erosion and conserving moisture for the subsequent planting.
In the Canadian trials, researchers set up side‑by‑side plots: one set received a cover‑crop mix after termination, the other was left fallow before the annual sowing. Across the test sites, the plots with cover crops consistently showed less regrowth of the former perennial species and a lower density of weed seedlings, leading to cleaner seedbeds for the next crop.
If these findings hold up in larger‑scale studies, the technique could provide a low‑input tool for growers facing aging seed stands. Reduced reliance on herbicides, improved soil structure, and a smoother transition timeline align with broader goals of sustainable and climate‑resilient agriculture.
Further work is planned to fine‑tune species selections, seeding rates, and timing, as well as to evaluate economic trade‑offs. Extension agencies are expected to monitor the outcomes and offer guidance as the practice moves from experimental plots to commercial fields.
