As the calendar turns to September, the evenings grow noticeably longer, giving sky‑watchers a wider window to explore the night canopy. 2026’s autumn months promise a series of familiar and new objects that become visible as the Sun sets earlier each night, making it an ideal time for both seasoned astronomers and casual hobbyists to dust off their binoculars and telescopes.

With sunset drifting toward 7 p.m. in many mid‑latitude regions, the period of darkness extends by roughly an hour compared with the summer solstice. This extra darkness not only lengthens the time available for observation but also improves contrast for faint deep‑sky objects, especially when the Moon is in a waning phase. Clear, crisp autumn air further reduces atmospheric turbulence, sharpening the view of distant targets.

The Leonids, occurring around November 17, are known for occasional fireball storms; even in a modest year, a handful of bright meteors per hour can be seen under dark skies.
