Apple Introduces New Disclosure Rule for Dating and AI Companion Apps

Apple announced that developers of apps facilitating romantic connections will now be required to specify whether the platform connects real users, AI entities, or both, enabling the company to assign appropriate age ratings.

The change expands Apple's existing App Store rating framework, which already classifies apps for content such as violence, gambling, and sexual material. By adding a distinct category for dating and AI companionship, Apple aims to give parents and guardians clearer guidance.

The policy arrives as AI‑generated characters and chatbots become more prevalent in social and dating contexts. Critics have warned that minors could be exposed to interactions that blur the line between human relationships and algorithmic simulations, raising privacy and consent concerns.

Developers will need to update their app metadata in the App Store Connect portal, indicating the nature of the connections their service supports. Failure to provide accurate information could result in the app being removed or re‑rated to a higher age restriction, limiting its visibility in the store.

Industry observers say the requirement could push dating platforms to be more transparent about the role of AI, while also prompting a review of how age verification is enforced. Apple has not disclosed a timeline for enforcement, but expects compliance before the next quarterly review cycle.
