Apple unveils second‑generation HomePod mini with AI‑boosted Siri and visual Sound Glow, sparking $50 price debate

Apple has rolled out a second‑generation HomePod mini, raising its price by $50 compared with the original model and prompting buyers to weigh the value of its upgraded hardware and new features.

The latest speaker ships with a next‑generation processor that Apple says expands on‑device computation for both voice commands and audio rendering. By handling more tasks locally, the chip aims to reduce latency, improve response times for Siri requests, and support higher‑fidelity sound processing without relying as heavily on cloud services.

Accompanying the hardware upgrade is a more capable version of Siri, now marketed as an AI‑enhanced assistant. The updated software promises deeper contextual awareness, more natural conversational flow, and the ability to carry out certain queries entirely offline, a step Apple has highlighted as a differentiator in the crowded smart‑speaker market.

A visual element called Sound Glow also makes its debut. The feature adds an outer ring of LEDs that pulse in rhythm with music and react to spoken prompts, giving the compact speaker a subtle yet noticeable light show that can serve both aesthetic and functional purposes, such as indicating active listening.

Analysts note that the $50 premium places the new HomePod mini above many competing devices, but Apple’s ecosystem integration and the promise of a more responsive, visually engaging assistant may appeal to existing iPhone and Mac users. The company has not disclosed a launch date for a potential price adjustment, leaving consumers to decide whether the processor, Siri improvements, and Sound Glow justify the added cost in the short term.
