Apple Tightens App Store Policy to Block AI‑Generated Non‑Consensual Nudity

Apple has revised its App Store guidelines to explicitly prohibit so‑called “nudify” applications that use generative AI to create intimate images of individuals without their permission.

The change follows a wave of public criticism after users on X employed the Grok AI model earlier this year to produce non‑consensual nude depictions, highlighting the potential for abuse of emerging image‑generation tools.

Under the new language, any app that enables the creation, alteration, or distribution of such imagery will be removed from the store, and developers found in violation may have their accounts terminated.

Apple’s policy team said earlier rules banned “non‑consensual deepfake” content but were too vague to cover the growing niche of “nudify” filters that market themselves as novelty or artistic effects. By naming the practice, the company hopes to close a loophole that allowed some apps to remain on the platform.

The update mirrors steps taken by other tech giants, including Google and Meta, which have introduced similar restrictions on AI‑generated pornographic content. Legal experts note that clearer policies could aid regulators in tackling digital sexual abuse.

Critics caution that enforcement will be difficult, given the rapid evolution of AI models and the ease with which developers can rebrand services outside the App Store ecosystem. Apple has pledged to strengthen its review process and collaborate with independent experts to spot violations, but detection technology remains an arms race.

The revised guidelines are slated to take effect within the next quarter, giving developers a window to modify or withdraw offending apps. The move underscores the broader pressure on technology firms to balance AI innovation with user safety and privacy concerns.
