Apple Tightens Age Limits for Dating Apps and AI Companions

Apple announced that it will raise the minimum age requirement for dating applications and a broad category of AI-driven companion chatbots to 18 years old, a move aimed at bolstering protection for younger users on its App Store platform.

The change updates the company's existing age‑rating framework, which already obliges developers to assign a content rating based on the nature of the app. Under the new rule, any app that facilitates romantic matchmaking must be labeled 18+, regardless of previous lower‑age classifications.

In parallel, Apple is applying an automatic 18+ rating to most AI companion chatbots. The policy reflects the company’s assessment that these conversational agents often generate mature dialogue, including topics of a sexual or emotionally intimate nature, and therefore should be restricted to adult users.

Apple officials cited concerns about minors encountering inappropriate content, as well as broader issues around data privacy and the potential for manipulation in AI‑mediated interactions. By enforcing stricter age gates, the tech giant says it hopes to reduce the risk of underage exposure to content that could be exploitative or psychologically harmful.

The directive will require developers to revise their onboarding flows, implement robust age verification mechanisms, and, in some cases, redesign user interfaces to comply with the higher threshold. Industry observers note that the shift could affect revenue streams for smaller creators who rely on a younger demographic, while larger firms may be better positioned to absorb the compliance costs.

Apple’s policy aligns with a growing trend among major platforms to impose tighter safeguards for youth, a response to heightened regulatory scrutiny in the United States and Europe. Lawmakers and consumer‑advocacy groups have increasingly called for stricter controls on digital services that target or attract minors.

The company has given developers a short window to update their apps before the new standards take effect, and it will enforce compliance through its routine App Store review process. Stakeholders will be watching closely to see how the rule shapes the landscape of mobile dating and AI companionship services in the months ahead.
