Western Farming Reached Gansu Through Cultural Exchange, DNA Shows

A new multidisciplinary analysis of ancient DNA from human remains in Gansu province, China, indicates that the introduction of western farming practices occurred without a large influx of migrants. The genetic signatures of the sampled individuals remain closely aligned with local populations, suggesting that agricultural techniques spread primarily via cultural transmission.

Researchers combined genome sequencing of skeletal material dated to the Neolithic and early Bronze Age with archaeological assessments of burial sites and isotopic measurements of diet. The DNA data reveal continuity in the maternal and paternal lineages across the studied interval, while the material culture—such as stone tools and pottery styles—shows clear influences from western Eurasian farming communities.

The findings challenge the long‑standing demic diffusion model, which posits that the spread of agriculture across Eurasia was driven mainly by mass movements of farming peoples. Instead, the study supports a scenario in which local hunter‑gatherer groups adopted cultivated crops and related technologies through trade networks and interpersonal contact.

Gansu, located along the ancient Hexi Corridor, has historically served as a conduit between the Chinese heartland and the steppes of Central Asia. Its position made it a natural meeting point for diverse groups during the Neolithic, and the new evidence adds nuance to the picture of how ideas and goods moved across this landscape.

Burial practices uncovered at the sites further illustrate the blend of traditions. While some graves contain characteristic western Eurasian grave goods, others retain indigenous ceremonial elements, indicating a gradual integration of external influences rather than a wholesale cultural replacement.

By demonstrating that agricultural knowledge could travel without accompanying population replacement, the research reshapes our understanding of early socioeconomic transformations in East Asia. It also aligns with recent studies from other peripheral regions that emphasize the role of exchange networks in the spread of farming.

The authors note that additional sampling from neighboring provinces and more precise radiocarbon dating will be needed to map the exact routes and timing of these exchanges. Nevertheless, the current results underscore the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in reconstructing prehistoric human dynamics.
