Alaska’s Bright Orange River Waters Found More Toxic Than Typical Mine Drainage

Scientists studying a vivid orange plume that first appeared in a Brooks Range river in 2018 have determined that the water is unusually acidic and laden with metals, surpassing the contamination levels typically seen in acid mine drainage despite the area’s untouched appearance.

The discoloration, which stretches for miles and turns the river a striking hue, first caught researchers' attention during routine monitoring of remote Alaskan waterways. Subsequent sampling revealed that the plume’s chemistry was markedly different from surrounding streams, prompting a detailed investigation by a team from the University of California.

Laboratory analysis showed that the orange water contains elevated concentrations of dissolved metals and a pH lower than that recorded in most documented cases of acid mine drainage, the corrosive runoff that leaches from abandoned or active mining sites. By comparing the river’s composition with established benchmarks for mining-impacted streams, the researchers concluded that the Brooks Range plume is chemically more severe.

The discovery challenges the assumption that remote, seemingly pristine environments are free from extreme water quality issues. It underscores the need for broader surveillance of headwater systems, which can serve as early indicators of geochemical changes that may eventually affect larger river basins and downstream communities.

While the exact source of the metal-rich, acidic water remains under investigation, scientists suggest that natural processes such as the weathering of mineral-rich bedrock, permafrost thaw, or the oxidation of exposed sulfide deposits could be responsible. Ongoing field work aims to pinpoint the mechanisms driving the plume’s formation and to assess whether climate‑related shifts are amplifying the phenomenon.
