Airbnb Prohibits Hosts From Requiring Guests to Do the Dishes
Airbnb announced a policy shift that bars property owners from asking short‑term renters to handle chores typically performed by professional cleaners, starting with the most common request: washing dishes.
The change comes after a wave of complaints from travelers who said they were expected to leave the kitchen spotless, even when a cleaning fee had already been paid. Under the new guidelines, any task that a hired cleaning service would normally cover is no longer considered a reasonable demand on guests.
Airbnb officials explained that the move is intended to create a clearer separation between the services paid for through the platform and the responsibilities of the guest. By defining “reasonable requests” more narrowly, the company hopes to reduce friction and ensure that the price guests see reflects the level of service they will receive.
Hosts have expressed mixed reactions. Some see the rule as an unnecessary intrusion into how they manage their properties, arguing that they rely on guests to help keep turnover times short. Others welcome the clarification, noting that it protects them from negative reviews that arise when guests feel they are being treated as unpaid cleaners.
For travelers, the update removes a source of ambiguity that has sometimes led to awkward confrontations. Guests can now book a stay with greater confidence that the cleaning fee they pay will indeed cover the post‑stay cleaning, without the expectation of additional labor on their part.
Airbnb says it will monitor compliance through its review system and will take action against listings that continue to request prohibited chores. The policy adds to a broader effort by the platform to standardize expectations and could set a precedent for other short‑term rental services to follow.
